Below is the official press release:
The Erotic Museum in Paris, France was founded by Alain Plumey and Joseph Khalifa, who assembled a vast collection of erotic art and artifacts in the 30 years that preceded the museum's opening in 1997. The two men turned a former cabaret into seven stories of galleries; some devoted to permanent displays and others featuring temporary exhibits of art and pornography. The most fascinating part of the Erotic Museum--the extensive gallery of brothel photos, drawings, and documents from the late 19th Century until 1946, when the French government closed down bordellos.
Our March exhibit, "EROTICA" was created as a companion piece to the other erotic art events that take place in the DC area each winter. The erotic art movement in DC was sparked by Dave Quammen at MOCA DC. His first erotic show was so popular it became an annual staple in the area. MOCA DC reminded us that eroticism has been an important part of art throughout history and had an impact on many major European art movements.
In the collaborative spirit, Design Studio Art Gallery, Cheryl Edwards' Studio, VM photography & Makeup Studio, and artdc Gallery are creating the Musée de l'Erotisme in Maryland by bringing the feeling of Musée de l'Erotisme to the art corridor in Maryland with a stunning four gallery exhibit!
