I know that on the surface, there's really no difference between a customized doll and a restored doll since both uses some of the same methods (such as face painting). But I personally think there are a couple of differences between the two. The dolls listed in the New Dolls Customized by Kim section originally came from unfinished kits so I had to create a new doll almost from scratch. In contrast, the restored dolls mentioned here were originally completed dolls—meaning that they have hair, eyes, face-ups, and even clothes in some cases. I originally purchased these dolls very cheaply because they were past their prime in terms of looks and they needed fixing up in order to look presentable again.
The restored dolls also differ from the customized dolls in that, in the case of the customized dolls, I was able to create new characters as I created their faces, styled their hair, and either sewed or purchased outfits for them. With restored dolls, I tried to maintain the integrity of the original doll artist's or doll manufacturer's vision as much as I possibly could. I only changed the faces, clothes, or hair if necessary. To learn more about how I restore used dolls, check out the article on Recycling Used Dolls From the Thrift Store in the General Doll Information section of this site.
The best thing about restoring a doll is knowing that I've was able to save a doll from ultimately ending in a landfill somewhere that did nothing but cluttering the Earth because the doll was made from non-biodegradable materials. Click on the thumbnail below to learn more about each doll.
