Dolls

Kim's Doll Gang

From time to time I use dolls in my art. Most of the dolls are not your typical mainstream Barbie dolls and most of the ones listed can only be purchased online. Here is a description of the dolls who have actually shown up in my various photographs, drawings, paintings, and even videos.

NOTE: Some of the dolls I purchased were blank dolls and I had to do my own doll faceup in order to look presentable. Other dolls already had faces that were painted by the manufacturer. Those that were done by the manufacturer will be listed as "Default".

The dolls are listed in order from smallest to tallest. Click on any of the photos to see a larger version open in a new window.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Leekeworld

Name of Doll Model: The Orient Doll Ji

Size: 3 inches/8 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: I had to use very tiny paintbrushes in order to paint her tiny face. I changed her eyes because I didn't like her original default ones. Her body was originally listed as an asexual body but I decided to make this doll into a female one. Her skin tone is a snow white tone.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Bobobie

Name of Doll Model: Sunny

Size: 5 inches/10 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: He is an anatomically correct male doll. He still wears his original default acrylic eyes. His skin is a light peach color. He has a tiny unicorn horn budding out of the center of his forehead.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Goodreau Doll

Name of Doll Model: Wiggles the Pig

Size: 9 inches/23 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: This doll was the first anthro animal doll that I've ever purchased. This doll can wear clothes made for the Goodreau Doll Critters line and the Goodreau Doll Snappy line. The doll has hoofed hands and human feet. (The feet are only noticeable if the doll is barefoot.) The doll's nude body looks like an asexual human body. The doll skin color is a very light pink color. The doll still wears the original default eyes.

Type of Doll: A doll with a rooted vinyl head and a rubber body.

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Volks

Name of Doll Model: Volks Dollfie Plus with Volks Custom Hair Head A and Volks Elegant Collection S (Slender Body).

Size: 11 inches/28 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: This doll was the very first doll that I've ever customized myself. I've dubbed her "The Blue Lady" because of her blue eyes and her predominantly blue Barbie outfit. I had to use very tiny paintbrushes in order to paint her small face. I also had to give her a hair cut since her long hair went down to her feet and it tended to cover her face. She can wear Barbie clothes and Barbie shoes. She can use various Barbie and Ken accessories (like guitars) and furniture (like chairs). Her body is anatomically correct. Even though her body is made out of rubber, she can pose beautifully and she can out-pose a typical Barbie doll.

Type of Doll: A doll with a rooted vinyl head and an articulated vinyl body.

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Volks

Name of Doll Model: Volks Dollfie Plus with Volks Custom Hair Head 03 and Volks NEO EB-Body (Go).

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: This doll was the first male doll that I've ever customized myself. I've dubbed him "The Blue Prince" because of his blue prince outfit that was originally made for a Ken doll. I had to use very tiny paintbrushes in order to paint his small face. I also had to give her a hair cut since his long hair went down to his feet and it tended to cover his face. He can wear Ken clothes but Ken's shoes are too big for this doll. He can use various Barbie and Ken accessories (like guitars) and furniture (like chairs). His body is anatomically correct. He can pose way better than a typical Ken doll.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Soom

Name of Doll Model: Mini-Gem Uyoo

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: I had to use very tiny paintbrushes in order to paint her small face. I changed her eyes because I didn't like her original default ones. She can wear Barbie clothes but not Barbie shoes. I found that the shoes made for the Only Hearts Club dolls fit her feet the best. She can also use various Barbie accessories (like guitars) and furniture (like chairs). People frequently assume that she is a Barbie doll, which is annoying considering the fact that she looks nothing like Barbie (she's more anatomically correct than Barbie) and can assume poses that Barbie can only dream about.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Soul Doll

Name of Doll Model: Little Soul Doll Kimmy

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: I had to use very tiny paintbrushes in order to paint his small face. He still wears his original default eyes. He can wear Ken clothes but I have to sew darts in the shirts because Ken's chest is beefier. Ken's shoes are too big for this doll. He can use various Barbie and Ken accessories (like guitars) and furniture (like chairs). People frequently assume that he is a Ken doll, which is annoying considering the fact that he looks nothing like Ken (he's more anatomically correct than Ken) and can assume poses that Ken can only dream about.

Type of Doll: Blythe

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Ashton-Drake Gallery

Name of Doll Model: Blythe

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: This doll is a reproduction of an early 1970's Blythe doll that was originally manufactured by the now-defunct Kenner. The doll's head is out of scale with her body. Her body can wear Barbie outfits and shoes but her head can fit in headgear that are made for Blythe, Pullips, or Super Dollfie-sized dolls. Pulling a string can change the color and directions of her eyes.

Type of Doll: Pullip

Doll Manufacturer: Chunsang Chunha

Doll Distributor: Jun Planning

Name of Doll Model: Latte

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Pullip is the flagship character of a line of dolls that are popular in Asia. This doll has several points of articulation so she can maintain the kind of poses that Barbie can envy. Like other Pullip dolls, this one comes with an outfit and accessories that are incredibly detailed. The doll's head is out of scale with her body. Her body can wear Barbie outfits and shoes but her head can fit in headgear that are made for Blythe, Pullips, or Super Dollfie-sized dolls. Pressing a lever or button on the back of her head can move her eyes and eyelids. Unlike Blythe, Pullip can't change the color of her eyes as they change direction.

Type of Doll: Namu

Doll Manufacturer: Chunsang Chunha

Doll Distributor: Jun Planning

Name of Doll Model: Trunk

Size: 12 inches/30 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Namu was originally released as the first boyfriend of Pullip, the flagship character of a line of dolls that are popular in Asia. (Namu has since been discontinued in favor of a new boyfriend for Pullip named Taeyang.) This doll has several points of articulation so he can maintain the kind of poses that Barbie and Ken can envy. Like other Pullip dolls, this one comes with an outfit and accessories that are incredibly detailed. The doll's head is out of scale with his body. His body can wear Ken outfits and shoes but his head can fit in headgear that are made for Blythe, Pullips, or Super Dollfie-sized dolls. The doll's tan skin, white, hair, and green eyes make him among the more lovely dolls that Jun Planning has ever released. Pressing a lever or button on the back of his head can move his eyes and eyelids. Unlike Blythe, Namu can't change the color of his eyes as they change direction.

Type of Doll: Vintage 1970's growing-hair doll.

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Ideal

Name of Doll Model: Velvet

Size: 15 inches/38 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Velvet is a growing-hair doll that was originally released as a younger cousin to Beautiful Crissy, the flagship of the growing-hair doll line that was manufactured by the now-defunct Ideal. Her hair can go from long to short without using scissors or hair extensions. While I owned Beautiful Crissy as a child, I had never owned Velvet until long after I became an adult when I found her partially nude and suffering from eye mold being sold cheaply at a doll show. Velvet was the first used doll that I ever restored to her original self. (Click here for further details.) The doll has sleep-eyes that close when she is lying down and open when she is standing or sitting up.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Bobobie

Name of Doll Model: Sprite Elf Girl (with a mature body)

Size: 16 inches/41 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Bobobie generally puts a Sprite Elf Girl head on an immature female body. However, thanks to the fine folks at Denver Doll Emporium, I was able to request a Sprite Elf Girl head on a mature female body. For a few extra bucks, I could request green resin and a faceup for my doll. This was the first doll I got that had elf ears and an unusual skin color, which makes finding wigs a challenge. (I have to make sure that the wig color doesn't clash with the skin color plus I have to make sure it doesn't interfere with the elf ears.) She still has her original default eyes. I found that this doll can wear a variety of doll clothes that were originally made for more mass-market mainstream dolls like Friends 2B Made and MGA Entertainment's BFC Ink.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Bobobie

Name of Doll Model: Jun Elf Boy

Size: 16 inches/41 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Bobobie generally makes Jun Elf Boy in a caucasian skin color but, for a few extra bucks, I could request light purple resin and a faceup for my doll. This was the second doll I got that had elf ears and an unusual skin color, which makes finding wigs a challenge. (I have to make sure that the wig color doesn't clash with the skin color plus I have to make sure it doesn't interfere with the elf ears.) He still has his original default eyes. I found that this doll can wear a variety of doll clothes that were originally made for more mass-market mainstream dolls like Friends 2B Made and MGA Entertainment's BFC Ink.

Type of Doll: Ellowyne Wilde

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Wilde Imaginations

Name of Doll Model: Nevermore

Size: 16 inches/41 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: This doll is made out of vinyl with rooted hair. With her black gothic outfit, red hair, and blue eyes, this doll is among the more visually striking dolls in my collection. She has several points of articulation and she can hold poses just as well as a ball-jointed doll (despite the fact that she has hinged joints rather than ball joints). Her outfit is full of incredible detail (such as tiny zippers on the side of her shoes). I found that this doll can wear a variety of doll clothes that were originally made for more mass-market mainstream dolls like Friends 2B Made and MGA Entertainment's BFC Ink.

Type of Doll: Teen Trends

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Mattel

Name of Doll Model: Kianna

Size: 17 inches/43 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Teen Trends dolls originally caught my eye in the stores because their outfits remind me of the outfits that are typically made for Mini Super Dollfie-sized ball-jointed dolls and their looks remind me of a ball-jointed doll as well. When I purchased one and brought her home, I discovered that this doll had ball-joints and elastic stringing. She was made out of vinyl with rooted hair and a painted face. Her outfits were affordable (each separate outfit cost $12 each and it included tiny accessories like a cell phone) and well-made (complete with tiny details). For $40 I got a doll, an outfit, doll case, doll stand, and a few small accessories, which was way lower than a ball-jointed doll of the same size.

Type of Doll: Vintage 1970's growing-hair doll.

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Ideal

Name of Doll Model: Beautiful Crissy

Size: 18 inches/46 cm

Faceup: Default

Tidbits: Beautiful Crissy was the flagship of the growing-hair doll line that was manufactured by the now-defunct Ideal. Her hair can go from long to short without using scissors or hair extensions. I owned Beautiful Crissy as a child (along with several outfits and a doll case) and I loved playing with her. My mother got rid of my doll once I outgrew her. However, a few years ago I began to regret that I had very few toys from my childhood because of my mother's enthusiasm for doing frequent purges. I found out that Beautiful Crissy can still be found on eBay for a relatively low price so I bidded on one auction for a nude doll, then bidded on a different auction for her lace dress (which was the doll's original default outfit), then bidded on a third auction for her original default orange shoes, and, finally, I bidded on yet another auction for her original default orange lace panties (which originally came with her dress and shoes). When the items arrived separately, I put them together and I was thrilled that I got a childhood item back. Her growing hair function still works. The doll has sleep-eyes that close when she is lying down and open when she is standing or sitting up.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed vinyl doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Volks

Name of Doll Model: Dollfie Dream (Version 1 body and default head)

Size: 22 inches/58 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: This doll was the first large ball-jointed doll that I've ever purchased. The original Version 1 body came with a blank default head that I painted myself. (Volks has since come out with a Version 2 body where you have to buy the head separately.) The doll is made out of vinyl, has a light peach-colored skin, and is anatomically correct. I have made most of her clothes myself because there are hardly any cheaper mass-market doll clothes in her size and many specially-made clothes for a Dollfie Dream/Super Dollfie sized doll tend to be very expensive. She is a very striking doll and every time I have taken her out in public I get lots of attention.

Type of Doll: Ball-jointed resin doll

Doll Manufacturer/Distributor: Fantasy Doll

Name of Doll Model: Tobias

Size: 24 inches/60 cm

Faceup: Kim

Tidbits: This doll is the first and only large-sized male resin doll that I have purchased for myself. The doll has snow skin and is anatomically correct. I have made most of his clothes myself because there are hardly any cheaper mass-market doll clothes in his size and many specially-made clothes for a Dollfie Dream/Super Dollfie sized doll tend to be very expensive. He makes a nice male companion for my Volks Dollfie Dream.
