Dolls

Skulls & Roses

I was originally inspired to make this outfit after I saw a photograph of a doll manufactured by Notdoll Lab called "Miriam first, I am so fine". I wasn't fond of the doll (who looked like she barely survived a run-in with either Freddy Krueger or Chucky) but I did fall in love with her dress. The only thing I didn't like was that the top and armbands were knitted and the bottom was made out of fabric because I felt that combining two different craft styles (sewing and knitting) into one dress was a bit jarring. But I did love the color scheme and the style of the dress. I just felt that the dress would've worked better had it been either all-knitted or all-sewn. So I decided to make my own version after I found some fabric that I felt would be perfect along with some patterns that were close enough to the original outfit.

Type of Doll This Outfit Fits:1/3 scale doll (22-24 inches/60 cm).
Pattern It's Based On: The dress came from the book Period & Contemporary: Patterns for Fashion Dolls by Hazel McMahon. (I had to resize the pattern in order for it to fit my Volks Dollfie Dream.) The headband came from a pattern I found on the Undead Threads site. I had to improvise the armbands since I didn't find any patterns for them. I basically cut fabric rectangles then sewed them together and added lace at the bottom.
Outfit Description: The dress, headband, and armbands were made out of this awesome fabric that I found in the remnant table at a local Jo-Ann's Fabrics & Crafts. It's lined with red lace on the headband, the bottom of each armband, around the dress waist, and the bottom dress hem. The headband has two red ribbons attached to it with each one sporting a glittering red rose-shaped bead that I made out of red-glittered polymer clay. (I had to use a mold in order to make it into the shape of a rose.)
Date I Finished Work on It: June 3, 2007

This is the photo that originally inspired me to make this outfit, which came with a doll known as "Miriam first, I am so fine" and is manufactured by Notdoll Lab.

Here is my own version of the "Miriam first, I am so fine" dress, which I've named "Skulls & Roses".

The entire ensemble.

Close-up of the fabric I used for the outfit, which also shows the reason why I decided to name it "Skulls & Roses".

The armbands.

The headband.

Close-up of rose-shaped bead that is placed on the end of the ribbon that's attached to the headband.

The only real modifications I made to the dress (as opposed to the original Notdoll Lab outfit) were that I made the entire outfit out of fabric, I made the dress less skimpy at the bust, I omitted the row of lace in the middle of the skirt (because there was already a lot going on with the pattern), I used red lace instead of black, and I omitted the choker.
