Plant Doll Cosplay Outfit

This outfit was originally created for an Asian ball-jointed doll cosplay contest that took place during the Otakon convention in Baltimore in August, 2005. (For the uninitiated, "cosplay" is a Japanese word that was originally derived from the combination of two English words--"costume" and "play". Many anime and manga fans throughout the world tend to dress up as their favorite anime/manga character. Anime conventions and street festivals celebrating Japanese or Asian culture is usually the best way of seeing cosplayers in action.) I created my doll's outfit based upon a Plant Doll character in Yumiko Kawahara's manga series Dolls. (By the way, I didn't win the contest.)

Type of Doll This Outfit Fits: 1/3 scale doll (22-24 inches/60 cm).
Pattern It's Based On: The inspiration for this outfit came from a few drawings in the manga series Dolls by Yumiko Kawahara. I managed to construct a similar outfit using patterns from Venus A. Dodge's book The Dolls' Dressmaker.
Outfit Description: The wooden chair was purchased at a local gift shop for $10. I used the Monique Dutch Girl wig because that wig came closest to the hairstyle that's depicted in the original drawing. I used the black Azone shoes because they were the pair I own that best matched the outfit. I used a silk bouquet that I originally carried as a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding many years ago. I used cotton striped fabric that I found at a doll show. I made the hat out of felt that was stiffened with fabric stiffener and I trimmed it with fake craft flowers that I found at a local Michaels Arts & Crafts.
Date I Finished Work on It: August 4, 2005
