In photography the background is everything. If the background is just right, most people will not notice it as a standout since it fits the subject of the photo in question. If the background is ugly or does not match the subject of the photo, people will definitely notice. I decided to construct a doll photo stageset after I read a doll blog entry on how someone actually created a stageset out of plywood.
Since I live in a small space, constructing a plywood stage wasn't an option for me since there would be storage issues. Instead I constructed a collapsible stageset using two pieces of illustration board put together with duct tape. I lined the wall and floor of the stageset using special patterned papers that I purchased on sale from the scrapbooking aisle at Jo-Ann's Fabrics & Crafts. I now have a doll photo stageset that I can collapse and store when not in use that I created for about US$7. The only downside to the stage is that I have to lean the wall up against something solid since it can't stand up on its own but, otherwise, it's a pretty nice stageset.

My stage is designed to be accomodating to dolls of all sizes. My taller 1/3 scale dolls can easily sit in the photostage. The only minor problem is that they are slightly taller than the stage (I didn't have any illustration boards that were taller than what I already had) so I can have them standing in it if I don't care if a portion of wall shows. Although, since I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times, I'll probably just have my taller dolls sit in the stage whenever I need some new photos of any of them.
The stage is big enough for 1/4 scale and smaller dolls to stand in.
Here's the best part about this stage. When I'm done with shooting photos, all I have to do is fold it up and put it away. It takes up very little space, which is very nice.
