Grandfather Mazay was literally the first doll I've ever customized (which was sometime in the 1990's). He originally came as an unfinished nesting doll kit that was imported from Russia. I painted the nesting dolls using a pattern that was included with the kit. (Click on any of the photos to see a larger version open in a new window.)
The figures are based on the Russian legend of Granfather Mazay, an old man who would hunt rabbits for food in the winter but when a local river was flooding, Grandfather Mazay rescued the rabbits from drowning. The first four dolls are of various interpretations of Grandfather Mazay while the innermost doll consists of symbols of love.
Here is the back of Grandfather Mazay nesting doll set. The largest Grandfather Mazay's backpack is full of hearts and it reads "Grandfather Mazay's Bag of Love." The backpacks of the other three Grandfather Mazays are full of hearts but they lack writing on the outsides of the backpacks. The innermost doll basically reads "I Love You."
